RentACoder.com a.k.a RAC “is an international marketplace where people who need custom software developed can find coders in a safe and business-friendly environment.” RAC is arguably the most popular freelance platform in Pakistan and has thousands of registered service providers from Pakistan.

RentACoder has been displaying a warning message regarding Pakistani service providers for a few days.

I will have to agree that the energy crisis in Pakistan is serious but the way this message has been put up and the choice of the words don’t seem appropriate. One has to keep in mind that the serious freelancers – those who earn their bread and butter at RAC have already made necessary arrangements to tackle the electricity problems. Load shedding has been a part of Pakistani culture for over a decade and the Pakistani service providers at RAC must already have one of the many alternatives available in the local markets – the local desi UPS, the chinese UPS or the diesel/gas based generators etc.\
I have to disagree with the statement “and electricity is unavailable more often than not”. Majority, if not all, of the registered Pakistani freelancers at RAC are based in urban capitals of Pakistan where the dark times are 12 hours a day in the worst scenario – thus it can’t be labelled “unavailable more often than not” !
One also has to keep in mind the load shedding schedule – its up for an hour and then down for the next hour. Those working on laptops don’t have to worry as the down time lasts for an hour in the worst case where the laptop battery keeps the freelancer working.
RAC should be careful when posting such warning messages about a specific community, many of whom use RAC as a source of their primary income. On a side note, the government officials should also wake up and see whats going around. Wrong policy decisions and lack of commitment to solve national issues can have dreadful effects on the professionals of the country.

    Hi Ali,
I am glad other people have started taking notice about this seemingly harmless issue. Do check out http://greenwhite.org/2008/10/.....akistanis/ if you haven’t already, and join in the debate there :-)

It is surely the act of dirty mind indians. They are now targeting our I.T industry in this way. They cann’t the see the pakistan progressing in any way. I think all those who do freelancing on RAC should email the RAC management for this notice removal. Because as much i know the people who are doing free lancing have already made proper arrangement for this problem. And people are delivering their work, so there should be no problem at all at client side.

Love pakistan, work and pray for its progress.

I think guys at rent-a-coder are quite fair in publishing it out. They’re just passing information out to the valued buyers.

    Hi,
We are ranked in top 10 coder at RAC.
I believe that the intentions of RAC people seems to be positive and they simply try to safe their buyers and sellers.
But wordings can be updated, If we have any concern I recommend that you send a professional feedback to RAC directly, but keep it positive, polite and professional. Simply let them know that as being a Pakistani you are committed to your work and the electricty problem is not that harsh and is solveable.
So that they can simply revise their wordings.
Be Positive and Professional and it will benefit to us all.
    Regards,
    Faisal

    AoA,
Ale thanks for posting this very critical and sensitive issue. I would request all coders to send message to RAC for removing this message. Here is the text of message which i sent. Anyone may use it as a sample:
    Hi,
I am developer and IT professional from Pakistan. I would request you to kindly remove a very negative message regarding Pakistan and its electricity issues, displayed on RAC. Although there are issues but people wokring in the industry know, how to tackle them. Most of the professional freelancers and ALL IT companies have UPS/Backup generators. Secondly the problem is not as severe as it is hyped about in media. Kindly remove this message as it will hurt the bread and butter of many Pakistani coders and will also leave a negative sentiment about RAC.
    With kind regards,
    Zeyad

I am from Pakistan, working on RAC for more than seven years, and you know what, this is the worst thing I have seen on RAC. Displaying suc message means, atleast 90% new clients are not available anymore for Pakistanis. Only those who have been working with us, and we have their trust, may continue.
I have several types of alternates for power available, so the fact is, my computer runs 24 hours a day. Why I have done so? because, I am serious to my work and invest back some of my money to my work to make sure I am available anytime of the day. No matter if regular supply is available or not.
My vote for the Pakistanis, and to ask RAC to remove such message. Ofcourse, they can display this some other way, but not as “RED ALERT”. This place is for the site shut down for maintanance or such things affecting ALL users from all countries. Not some specific country should be disgraced like this.
    thanks,
    Sameers

First of all let me tell you that Electricity problems are being faced by every country. Energy crisis are everywhere. But it is quite surprising that a message was published in such a way that a country’s name was used. Infact some of neighbouring fellows might be involved in this shameful act of labeling a country name in this way.

We pakistanies are quite responsible to full fill our committments and this is quite ridiciluious to say that services delivery may suffer from our end. I strongly condemmn this act of shameful publishing by Rent a Coder. We strongly denounce such things. Rent a Coder should immediately remove this warnining message from their site and should behave in a professional manner.
